Door Handle Replacement
It's worth replacing door handles if you aren't happy with the way they look, or if they're difficult to use. Installing the new handle on your door is easy if you have patience.
Modern door handles are often equipped with cover plates which hide the screws, giving them an attractive look. If your new handle doesn't have them already connected, you'll need to attach them separately.
Remove the old Handle
Door handles aren't just an essential for aesthetics of your home, but they're essential for security as they let you lock and unlock your door. However, as time passes the door handle could lose its grip, appear loose or start to look old and worn. This is an indication that it's the time to replace your door handle.
One of the first signs that your door handle is in need of replacing is the fact that it is becoming difficult to operate. This is a problem since it means that you can no longer lock or unlock your door which could be a security risk for you and your family.
Another reason to replace the door handle is if it's damaged or broken. A damaged or broken door handle can be dangerous, particularly for elderly and children members who may struggle to open it. They could be trapped. It's easy to fix a damaged handle on doors.
The majority of modern door handles are a standard size and so they should fit any door. If you're not certain that your new door handle will work, take off the old one and measure its housing holes. This will allow you to buy the right size door handle.
The most straightforward method to take off the handle from your door is to remove it from the door. This is typically done with the screw driver. Some door handles come with an enclosure plate that hides the screws used to mount them. It is necessary to remove this to get to the screws. Once you've removed your old handle, make a note of how the spindle is positioned to ensure that you can align it when you fit the new one.
You can also remove the door handle by removing the latch mechanism. This is typically done with a screwdriver but you'll need to find the small latch, which is located on the edge of the trim piece. After you have removed the latch, you'll need to unscrew the handle from the strike plate and then the latch off the door's edge.
Remove the Strike Plate
When you replace the handle, you'll need to replace the latch plate that holds the hole that the door's latch is inserted into when it closes. The new handles will come with two latch plates: a rectangular and circular plate (see the above diagram which shows the various parts of a door handle). If you have a rectangular latch plate, replace it with a round one. This will allow the latch to be able to hook into the strike plate and make the handle easier.
The first step is to unscrew the screw that's holding the old latch plate in place. The screws can be very tight, and will require some force to loosen. It may be helpful to get a second person to assist with this task if you can.
The latch plate should come out of the door once the screws have been removed. If the latch plate is stuck or won't move use a small file to scrape the edges. This can sometimes free up the plate.

Now you can move on to creating the new door strike plate to be installed. Attach the latch plate to the doorjamb using the wood screws that came with the new handles. Don't over tighten your screws because this could damage the strike plate.
If you're not sure if the latch plate is in the right position Try closing and then opening the door to see whether it locks and closes correctly. If it doesn't you'll need to adjust the strike plate upwards or down, or even forward or back until the door closes and latches correctly.
If the door is still jiggling or moving, you may need to increase the size of the hole for latching in the strike plate. This is more common with older doors, but could be due to wear and tear hinge mortises that are too shallow or are not sized correctly for the latch, or from a broken or damaged strike plate that is damaged or broken. If this is the case, follow the same procedure to adjust the strike plate, but using an iron file instead of the hammer and chisel.
Take off the Latch
The latch is a bent metal piece that slides into and out of a hole in the inside of your door. The latch is pushed forward when you turn the handle. It also hooks into an opening in the door frame to keep the door shut. If your door shakes when you close it, changing the latch could be the only thing needed to fix it.
The screws that hold the door latch are difficult to locate, but you can usually use a screwdriver to make an insignificant hole on the trim plate and then pry the latch off. After removing the trim plate, you should be able to take off the latch, as well as the bolts that hold it and the spindle that holds it.
If the latch cannot be easily removed then use a paperclip tool to take it off the handle mechanism. Insert the item into the recessed latch slot and gently move it around until you feel the handle and latch start to split. You may need to repeat this several times before the latch comes loose enough to allow it to be pulled out.
You should be able to slide the new latch into its slot without issues once you have removed the old one. Use your new screws to attach the latch to the strike plate or door frame. Make sure it is correctly placed in the slot and aligned with the screw chambers.
Before you install the new handle, make sure to measure your current backset (the distance from the center of the large hole on the front surface of the door to the edge). Also, make sure that the latch size on the new handle is in line with this measurement.
If you're replacing the latch or handle or handle, or if the old lock cylinder has been damaged, then you'll need an entirely new one. If you're not changing locks, a new lock should fit inside the recess you have already installed, and will work with the keys you have already. Choose a latch that has rectangular cover plates to match your old handles.

Not all doors have this gap. If yours does not allow for a handle, you'll have to make a hole into the door. This is the same procedure as opening a door locked, but you will have to be extra careful not to scratch the door or frame.
After drilling the holes then you'll need to install new screws for the door knob. Buy the same size as the old screws to ensure that you don't get the handle that is too loose or tight. Installing a new latch and strike rod is also necessary. These aren't included in all door handle sets.
